Sandy Searcy, IHSAA Ass’t. Commissioner,
Mick Renneisen, Indiana ASA State Commissioner,

The purpose of the alliance is to join forces to provide enhanced and comprehensive umpire education opportunities. As a result, each organization will be offering training opportunities throughout the spring and summer of 2014. Attendance at an ASA Umpire school will be counted as credit for attending an IHSAA softball clinic. Officials will need to pay membership dues to the IHSAA and/or Indiana ASA in order to be eligible to officiate games in each respective organization.

The IHSAA will now be conducting official’s clinics every year. Officials will still be required to attend a clinic every other year as a prerequisite to apply for the postseason tournament.

Indiana ASA requires attendance at an ASA School at least once every three years and attendance at an ASA Clinic any year that a school was not attended for softball umpires to be eligible to work state or national tournaments.

Sandy Searcy, IHSAA Assistant Commissioner, commented: “We encourage all officials to take part in this opportunity to improve skills as an IHSAA softball umpire. It is a great way to dust off your rule book to get ready for the upcoming season."

Indiana ASA State Commissioner Mick Renneisen commented: “I want to thank Sandy Searcy for reaching out to us to discuss this opportunity. We think this partnership will be a more efficient way to get both organizations’ softball umpires trained while eliminating overlapping clinic and school dates. The majority of the instructors for the clinics/schools were already doing the training for both organizations.”
